Permitting
It is crucially important to make sure any company you use to help you move is properly licensed and insured. In WA State there are two types of licenses you should look for: a WA Utilities and Transportation (UTC) permit number and a US Department of Transportation (DOT) number. The UTC requirements include insurance, background checks, and being in compliance with price regulations. The DOT regulates vehicle safety and maintenance as well as driver drug tests and training.
If you use a moving company that is not licensed, aka an illegal moving company, you put yourself at severe risk. The trucks used on your move may not be properly maintained, your items will not be insured, and you may be letting criminals into your home. On top of that, they may force you to pay higher than agreed upon prices before delivering your items. Be sure to verify the licenses of any company you hire.
